THE Nigerian Army, yesterday, scored itself high, saying its Operation Crocodile Smile II crushed militancy, oil theft and related crimes in the Niger Delta region.

Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai, who spoke during the closing ceremony of the operation at 6 Division Step Up, Igwuruta, Rivers State, said the 21-day operation recorded huge success, stressing that it was felt in the Niger Delta and states under the 81 Division.

Lieutenant General Buratai, who disclosed that some of the soldiers would be deployed to the North-East, said it was heart-warming to note that despite the wicked rumour that soldiers were injecting school children with Monkey Pox, the medical out reach programme in communities during the exercise still went on smoothly.

“This marked the closing ceremony of Operation Crocodile Smile II. But the military operation continues. The exercise reduced militancy, illegal oil bunkering, kidnapping and pipeline vandalism. I am pleased to note that the objective of the exercise was achieved, “ he said, adding that the Army would sustain its tempo on maritime ways and other parts of the Niger Delta to deepen security of lives and properties in the area.

The Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mansir Muhammad Dan-Ali, who declared the operation closed in the region, commended the Army for its depth of professionalism during the exercise, adding that the Federal Government would continue to support the Army to succeed in discharging its constitutional roles.

Governors of Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta and Akwa Ibom states hailed the success of the exercise.
